Oakley Almond Festival 2001 / FireFund2If you want one image that sums up the community spirit evident at this year's festival, this is it. Volunteers from the local fire districts sent out red wagons to collect donations to send to the families of firefighters who perished while performing rescue operations at the World Trade Center. A preliminary tally at the end of the weekend showed the take at more than $5,000. At least one person wrote a check for $300. Oakley doesn't just give from the heart; it gives from its wallets as well. Photo by Glenn Gehlke. |
